NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – A Newport News man was sentenced to eight years in prison Tuesday for the fatal shooting of a woman during a road rage incident that occurred in 2022. The sentencing follows a conviction related to the death of 24-year-old Thalia De-Andra Marandola. The incident took place on August 29, 2022, near the intersection of Oyster Point Road and Canon Boulevard. According to court records and police reports, what began as a traffic dispute quickly escalated into violence when the defendant opened fire on Marandola’s vehicle. Marandola was struck by the gunfire and later died from her injuries. In court, family members of the victim shared emotional statements, describing her as a kind and vibrant young woman whose life was cut short by a senseless act of violence. While the prosecution sought a significant sentence to reflect the gravity of the crime, the defense argued for leniency, citing the defendant's lack of a prior violent criminal record. The judge ultimately handed down a sentence of eight years of active incarceration, followed by a period of supervised probation. "There are no winners in a case like this," a spokesperson for the Commonwealth's Attorney's office stated following the hearing. "A young woman has lost her life, and a man is going to prison, all because of a moment of unchecked anger on our roads." The Newport News Police Department continues to urge drivers to remain calm and contact authorities if they encounter aggressive behavior on the road rather than engaging with other motorists. https://presswhatmatters.com/road-rage-turns-deadly-in-newport-news-woman-killed-in-parking-lot-shooting
